English level

Universities require students whose first language is not English to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language. Below you see the required (average) score of as well as IELTS as TOEFL for a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree program.

 IELTS (Academic) TOEFL
Undergraduate
Bachelor's degrees 		Minimum overall band of 6.0
(with no band less than 5.5)		 A minimum score of 550
TWE 4.0 (paper-based test) or 213, Essay Rating 4.0 (computer-based test), iBT 80 (minimum writing 19)
Postgraduate
Master's degrees		 Minimum overall band of 6.5
(with no band less than 6.0)		 A minimum score of 575
TWE 4.0 (paper-based test) or 233, Essay Rating 4.0 (computer-based test), iBT 90 (minimum writing 20)

IELTS

IELTS stands for 'International English Language Testing System'. It is a test of English language proficiency. There are two versions of the IELTS, The Academic Version and the General Training Version:

  • The Academic Version is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country.
  • The General Training Version is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.  

TOEFL
The TOEFL is a very popular English exam. TOEFL means ‘Test of English as a Foreign Language’. The TOEFL is an academic exam.  The new TOEFL uses Internet. Its name is Internet-Based TOEFL (iBT). The old TOEFLs did not stop. They are called Computer-Based TOEFL (CBT) and Paper-Based TOEFL, but are currently not available in all countries.
